Against all the odds, Sevenoaks U14 girls went to Canterbury hoping to get to the final but returned triumphantly as Kent Champions having played the most exciting and gutsy hockey of the tournament.
After a bit of a struggle scoring goals during the first part of this season, they were pleased to beat Simon Langton 6-0 and Highsted 4-0 in the opening games of their section. After this they didn’t look back and went on to beat Sutton Valence 2-1 and local rivals, Tonbridge GGS 1-0 to win through to the quarter finals. Here they met TWGGS and won 2-0 with fine goals from Sophie Weller and Lucy Eiffon-Jones. In the semi we felt quite lucky to avoid Kings and Kent College Canterbury, and had to play Sutton Valence again. This time they played fluid attacking hockey and won 3-0 to earn not only a place in the Regional Finals but also a chance to beat KCC in the Kent Final. We could hardly believe our own play in this hotly contested match!
Sevenoaks had ten awesome minutes where they passed the ball quickly and effectively enabling them to push past the crumbling KCC defence and amazingly, after two brilliant through balls from captain, Tara Daly and vice-captain Sarah Dodds, top scorer Sophie Weller smashed home two excellent Championship winning goals! They then defended their lead with staunch determination for the remaining ten minutes with Amanda Cottle, Geni Carter, Alice Kidd and GK, Gaby Hodgkin being really tested for the first time that day.
Sevenoaks now go on to represent Kent in the Regional Finals in November as Champions! Well done those girls!!
