In mid-July 30 senior girl hockey players travelled to Cape Town to take part in the prestigious Brothers Sport International Hockey Festival.
After a successful training camp in Stellenbosch, and two warm up matches each, the group moved to Cape Town to play in the festival which included teams from all over South Africa, Australia, Holland and England. Each team played a total of seven festival matches, with the A team finishing 8th /24, the highest placed English team ahead of Millfield, Uppingham and Dauntseys. The B team finished a very creditable 22nd being the only 2nd team in the tournament.
In addition to hockey, the girls visited Table Mountain, Cape Point, the penguins at Boulders Bay, Cango caves and Robben Island. They also went on a game drive and attempted to spot the lesser spotted whales in Hermanus. However, the highlight for the girls and the staff was the visit to Fisantekraal Township where they visited the Trevor Manuel School, the crèche, and the age concern centre and were treated to a traditional South African lunch. The girls were outstanding ambassadors for Sevenoaks School and really enjoyed the interaction with the people of Fistantekraal. It enabled them to get a real appreciation of where and how the money which they raised (in the region of £1700), will be spent.
