Big Gig 2012

The ‘Big Gig’ 2012 heralded the beginning of Upper School Charity week in October. The event was a sell-out with funds raised going to two main charities: The MulaMula project in Africa, and the Valence School swimming pool appeal.

The youngest performers on the night ‘Purple Dragon’ set the hall alight with their professional performance. Year 11 band ‘The Alamo’ took us to the break with some fabulous and original close-harmony folk-pop. Stand-out acts in the second half were Tarish Trivedi (U6) and Will Griffiths (Y10). Tarish’s original, technically excellent rapping had the audience spell-bound, whereas Will raised the roof with his entertaining beat-boxing skills. Chris Ying and Johnny Cheung (U6) provided great backing for a number of acts, before Ayman El-Farouki (U6) and the basketball team brought proceedings to an entertaining close. The evening raised over £2000 and was hugely enjoyed by everybody.

IC: 50 not out

On Saturday 29 September the school hosted a landmark dinner to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the International Centre boarding house. Some 150 guests, including former pupils and nearly all Housemasters, spanning five decades, were in attendance. Many guests took the opportunity to tour the school and return to the original IC in Oak Lane, now occupied by School House.

Guest of honour, and now in his 90th year, was former Headmaster, Mr Kim Taylor (1954-68), who, following drinks at the IC and a gourmet meal in the school dining hall, delivered a fascinating speech on the challenges he had to face to get the House up and running.
