After a successful weekend at the RYA Team Racing National Championships, Sevenoaks School has been selected to compete in the World Championships.
The UK Team Racing National Championships took place on 19-20 March at Spinnaker Sailing Club in the New Forest. Twenty-four teams took part, including the top university and club teams and the top four teams from last October’s Youth Championships.
Despite the forecast for very little wind, the event saw two days of really nice weather and good tight racing. Sevenoaks emerged 15th overall, beating a number of university and club teams.
More importantly, Sevenoaks was the second-ranked youth team and one of only two selected to represent GBR U19s at the Team Racing World Championships, which will take place in Ireland during August. This is a great achievement and marks the first time a school team has been selected to represent GBR at the World Championships.
This selection rounds off a great season for the 1st team who have been training hard and have competed in a number of high-level events. In early July, they will take part in the Schools’ National and International Championships, and then turn their attention to training hard for the Worlds.
Sevenoaks School’s Head of Sailing Andy Cornah also competed at the Nationals with his team, the West Kirby Hawks, which includes two Old Sennockians. They were undefeated all weekend, clinching their third successive national title. They go through to the senior trials on 9-10 April, where they hope to gain selection as one of the two senior teams to represent GBR at the World Championships.
