Sevenoaks Sailors defeat Oxford University to win Jack Cade Cup

Sevenoaks School won the 2011 Jack Cade Cup on Saturday 26 November, defeating Oxford University in the final.

The Jack Cade cup was held at Bough Beech reservoir and hosted by Sevenoaks School. The event consisted of seven teams: three from Sevenoaks, plus teams from Magdalen College School, King's Canterbury, Ardingly and Oxford University.

In the morning all the teams raced each other in a round robin, with Oxford University coming out on top with six wins out of six, closely followed by Sevenoaks A who suffered their only loss in a very close race with Oxford.

The afternoon saw semi-finals and finals. Sevenoaks A comfortably beat Kings 2-0, and Oxford beat MCS 2-1. So the scene was set for Sevenoaks to take on Oxford University in the final and put right the loss they suffered early in the day. The first race of the final saw Oxford have a much better start, but Sevenoaks showed great determination and boat speed to catch and overtake the older sailors from Oxford and take the win. The second race saw a great move from Ed Broadhead, blocking two Oxford boats out at the start and allowing his teammates to show a clean pair of heels which they held to the finish to take the final 2-0. This was a great achievement for the first team, who are still a very new team and are steadily improving.

The afternoon also saw a good performance by a young Sevenoaks C team whose victories included two wins against a much older Ardingly team.
