On 5 and 6 March 2011, Sevenoaks School's First Sailing team competed at the Cambridge Cup, a high level event hosted by Cambridge University at Grafham Water. Sevenoaks was the only school team in this event, with the other competitors including ten university teams and six senior teams.
The Sevenoaks team gave a really good account of themselves, with many observers, competitors and umpires commenting on how well they were sailing. They took race wins off several teams including Cambridge, London and Bristol Universities. They also found themselves in winning positions in many other races, but their inexperience against much older teams was often telling and a few mistakes proved costly.
All in all, this was an encouraging performance and it is to the team's credit that they could attend a senior event and not look out of place.
Future events
Next up for the Firsts is London University Sailing Club's event on 12-13 March, and then the National Championships in Southampton, 19-20 March, for which Sevenoaks has been selected as one of only four U19 teams. From the National Championships, the top two youth teams will be selected to represent GBR U19s at the Team Racing World Championships, to be held in Ireland in August.
