Sevenoaks comes second at UK Maths Team Challenge Regional Finals

Congratulations to John Bryant, Roland Jones, Rhea Patel and Taba Gibb, who came second in the Regional Finals of the 2011 Team Maths Challenge on Wednesday 9 March.

Thirty teams from state and independent schools around Kent took part in an enjoyable and active day of mathematical problem solving, organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust.

On arriving at Tonbridge Grammar School, they were given some warm-up questions for the challenge ahead. The first round involved the whole team working together to solve 10 mathematical problems. John, Roland, Rhea and Taba were so good that they managed to score maximum points for this round. They then worked in pairs, combining their answers to solve a rather challenging cross-number puzzle.

After lunch, the competition continued with a head-to-head challenge where they competed against their opponents to be the first to correctly answer a series of questions. Team members worked in pairs on different questions, with the solution of each question dependent on the previous answer.

The final round was the relay race. Teams divided into pairs, with pairs taking it in turns to solve problems. This race against the clock created lots of excitement that brought the competition to a fitting finale.

Although the competition was extremely intense, our team performed very well indeed and finished the day in second place, with Reigate Grammar the winners. Congratulations and well done to all!
