Sevenoaks School were delighted with three out of four wins at the Kent Schools Winter Doubles Championships on Friday 11 March. They won the Junior Boys, Junior Girls and Senior Girls competitions and were also runners up in both girls events.
In the morning, the Sevenoaks 1st pair, county players Nick Brookes and Liam van den Hoek, saw off stiff opposition from local rivals Judd to win the Boys Junior Competition. Meanwhile 2nd pair Oscar Gordon-Reid and Matt were placed second in their section and were delighted to go on to win the Plate competition.
Then it was the turn of the girls, and we had high hopes of doing well having recently welcomed some excellent new players into Year 7 and the Lower Sixth. As hoped, both couples in Junior and Senior competitions beat schools including Benenden, Langley Park, Chislehurst & Sidcup and TWGGS to reach two all – Sevenoaks finals.
In the Junior Competition Chloe Broom paired up with Cathrine Hogh to beat Josephine Hogh and Ellie Knox in a final which had the crowds gasping with amazement, such was the power and accuracy of these young players! In the Seniors, Sophie Jenner and Mari Takino beat captains Jasmine Horsey and Becky Bibb in a hard-hitting final.
Coach Martin Whitehouse, who has brought many of these players through from an early age at Westheath Junior LTC, was delighted with the excellent results in this competition, which is unusually short and difficult to settle into. He gave credit to all the Sevenoaks players and praised their efforts and commitment to training.
Next weekend, the Senior Girls travel to Bolton Arena to play in the National Schools Winter Finals against opposition such as Queenswood and Millfield. Fingers crossed!
