In June of this year I was fortunate enough to fly out to United World College of South East Asia in Singapore to find out how they teach Psychology and also to see how they use ICT in their teaching and learning.

After recovering from jetlag and getting used to the tropical heat I spent a valuable week with Jane Graham (Head of Psychology) observing lessons and looking at their resources and teaching methods. Sevenoaks School is soon to introduce Higher Level Psychology now that it has become an established and successful subject in the school, and the visit to UWC was the perfect preparation for this development. Fortunately, I was able to contribute a significant amount to their department myself, particularly regarding the benefits of web based access to resources.

I also looked somewhat enviously at how ICT pervaded everything they did throughout the school. They are fanatical about Apple computers and it seemed with good reason. All students and teachers are provided with a MacBook, and this together with campus wide Wi-Fi opened up all sorts of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.

I was grateful for this opportunity and am convinced that this sort of professional development makes a huge difference to the quality of teaching at Sevenoaks School.
