Personal and Social Development Education

Head of Department: Mrs P Hargreaves poh@sevenoaksschool.org

The aims of PSD at Sevenoaks School:

  • To develop pupils’ self-awareness, confidence and resilience, allowing them to make informed decisions and take responsibility for their actions
  • To foster respect, empathy, and independence
  • To make them aware of broader horizons and the diversity of society and the wider world

The PSD programme is designed to complement and draw together themes and topics that are taught in academic departments, the co-curriculum and the hidden curriculum. This varied provision enables PSD to be embedded in the fabric of school life. We are committed to a balanced and broad education, with particular emphasis on the promotion of an international outlook and of mutual understanding and respect between boys and girls.

Model of Provision

  • Pupils in years 7 – 9 have 1 discrete lesson of PSD per fortnight. These are taught in forms by a small group of dedicated teachers from a range of academic departments. This enables more sensitive matters to be dealt with by specialists rather than all tutors.Occasional use is made of assemblies, tutor time and Saturday
morning schools on Wednesdays and Thursdays prior to exeats. PSD topics for Years 10 & 11 are delivered through the use of specialist sessions as part of the Saturday morning schools prior to exeats.
  • Some topics under the PSD umbrella are covered separately, for example the Middle School’s Careers programme and International Studies.
  • A programme of varied and stimulating lectures is organised for the Sixth form students throughout the academic year.

Parents are sent a termly newsletter to inform them about the topics which are covered. Additionally, parent workshops give an opportunity to learn more about the issues discussed in the classroom.
