London 2012 Olympics sustainability lecture

London 2012: our Olympic Games will be the most sustainable ever seen

As part of the Geography department's module on the London 2012 Olympics, Year 9 attended an illustrated lecture on the sustainability of our Games, on Wednesday 17 November. Amanda Kiely, the Sustainability Projects Manager of the Games, presented us with an inspiring and informative overview of the modern Olympic movement, our winning bid and the progress so far on the Olympic venue.

We saw unique fly-overs of the site and watched the velodrome’s construction with its amazing ecoroof. Sustainability is at the heart of all the planning, from the reusing of 90 per cent of the material removed from the site at its original clearance, to the reuse of 85 per cent of its heavily polluted soil after an innovative 'soil washing' procedure, the construction of some of the most original and environmentally friendly large scale buildings in Britain and the sourcing of as much of the food on sale as possible from local producers. Amanda Kiely was a very engaging and informative speaker and Year 9 enjoyed the lecture.
