James Roche (Wordsworth 03) doctoral engineering candidate at Southampton University co-designed 'Arthur', the skeleton bobsleigh, used by UK Olympic Gold Medal winner Amy Williams in Vancouver. A sailor at Sevenoaks, James received his M Eng in Ship Science from Southampton. His PhD research, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and supported by UK Sport, was to understand bob sled performance. 'Arthur' is the result of James' collaboration with Rachel Blackburn who was also at Southampton and the resulting sled is now part of a winning formula. As Amy Williams says 'Sometimes I don't speak to him (Arthur). Other times I do. But I always give him a pat at the end of my race'.
