Independent State School Partnership 2010

Magic of Numbers Day for Year 7 pupils

Thirty-five pupils from Partnership Schools enjoyed a day of mathematics at Sevenoaks School on Saturday 13 November. They competed in teams to solve number and logic puzzles and the difficult problem of dividing donuts, making new friends as they worked on the challenges.

After a ten-minute talk from Mr Ben Richards everyone found they had improved their long division and long multiplication. Accompanied by Sixth Form students, the teams investigated the puzzling problems of numbers in the school grounds and over lunch worked on a ‘true or false quiz’ that tested their mental arithmetic and more. After lunch they enjoyed a computer-based activity and completed the very full day with some creative maths which looked at origami, perspective and illusion.

The winning team, which received prizes and certificates, was made up of pupils from Knole Academy, Swanley, Sevenoaks, Wilmington Boys and Wilmington Girls schools.

Thanks to Helen Tebay, Lorna Stribling and Gillian Williams who ran the activities and to Dele Obe, Maggie Bolton and Mike Bolton who supported the students.
