IC Greco-Roman Evening

The Greco-Roman Evening

This year’s International Evening was a real success. Under the Greco-Roman theme the IC welcomed guests with a variety of revealing togas and offering traditional Italian and Greek nibbles. The guests thoroughly enjoyed the pre-show chatter amongst themselves whilst feasting on olives, grapes,  feta cheese from Greece, Cypriot salami,  ham and parmesan freshly imported from Italy, courtesy of Giovanni Chiarli, Alessandro Barbieri, Alexi Kirilenko and Nick Taki. Yes, an evening with all the richness and attributes of a banquet!

The two shows written by members of the Upper and Lower 6th were extremely well performed and had the audience in fits of laughter. The traditional banter and light sarcasm were not lacking, as other boarding houses were comically criticised. Yet, perhaps the most impressive feature of the plays was that the humour and comic scenes were all staged in an Ancient Roman/Greek environment and spirit, as the main characters adopted the names of Greek heroes, and mythological stories were cleverly alluded to.

The post-show meal was also surprisingly tasty, as Moussaka, made from Nicholas Taki’s special recipe was served, along with Greek salads and a traditional Italian Christmas dessert called Panettone covered in divine chocolate sauce, which the IC boys made a quick job of finishing after the guests had gone.

The heavy eating certainly did not prevent us students from enjoying a little dance amongst ourselves and sending the teachers up into Mr C.’s flat, out of sight. Although, it must be mentioned that Mr Connell did make his routine appearances at several stages throughout the night to demonstrate his own dancing skills and his true desire to be amongst us! Guillaume, Karan and Max chose some excellent dance music which had people getting very excited even in the small confines of the blue room and had girls leaving saying this International Evening had been the ‘best school event so far’. I can do nothing but agree and say how I thoroughly enjoyed the night.
