Harpsichord Evening

The academic year at Sevenoaks School is only just in its prime, yet still, on Friday 1 October, a group of musicians assembled in the Recital Room of the recently inaugurated Space. A large audience was congregated, poised on the edge of their seats, waiting to experience the delicate and intimate sound of the school harpsichord, both as a solo instrument, and accompanying student instrumentalists.

Throughout the evening, the audience was entranced with an assortment of pieces performed on a variety of instruments. The second half of the concert was devoted to the keyboard works of J S Bach, demonstrating the contrasting works within his Well-Tempered Clavier, and other masterpieces including the Partita No 1 and an Invention in D minor.

Mr Wey ignited a spark of curiosity in everyone’s mind as he explained the concepts behind a historically informed performance, the extraordinary mechanisms inside a harpsichord, as well as the ingenuity through which it is able to kindle the music which has attracted people from around the world for over 500 years.

A truly fantastic concert, which will be appreciated and remembered by both students and adults alike.
