Geography Calendar 2012

Geography is a dynamic subject and is at the forefront of understanding many of the world’s current events. The images in this year’s calendar highlight some of the big ‘changes’ that the world is experiencing at the moment. On a global scale, climate change is affecting ecosystems, causing drought in one area and more violent storms in another. Nations are becoming more interconnected as international trade and travel is increasing. On a more local level issues such as coastal erosion, increasing urban congestion and ageing populations are at the forefront of current decision-making. Once said by Michael Palin, Geography is ‘a subject which holds the key to our future’ and as such it enables us to understand the best way for people to adapt and respond to these changes.

100% of the profits made from selling the calendar will go directly towards the charity ‘Education For All’. Their aim is to provide girls from rural Moroccan communities in the High Atlas Mountains with the opportunity to have a secondary education. It was founded on the belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and taking control of one’s own life. They believe that if you educate a girl you educate a future generation as well. The first boarding house was set up in 2007 in the town of Dar Asni. Pupils taking part in the IB Geography Expedition to Morocco are able to visit the boarding house and witness the difference that this can make to their lives. A second boarding house was established in September 2009 in the remote town of Talaat n’Yacoub to provide the opportunity for a college education for girls who would not otherwise have this chance.

The calendar can be purchased through the Development Office at £10 each or £8 each if buying more than one, plus postage and packing.
