On Saturday 5 March, Sevenoaks welcomed 17 other schools to the Second Round Heats and the Southern Regional Final of the English Speaking Union Schools Mace Debating Competition. Several motions were debated, including: assisted suicide, quotas for women in politics, WikiLeaks, solitary confinement in the prison system and nuclear disarmament. Six schools proceeded to the Regional Finals, which were held in the afternoon in The Space.
We were delighted that the overall winners were the Sevenoaks team, Sophie Bird and Bilal Mateen. They will proceed to the national final, to be held on 1 April at the ESU’s London Headquarters in Westminster.
