Drama scholarships are offered at Year 9 (13+) and Year 12 (16+). Scholars have the chance to be involved in several productions, performances and workshop style clubs throughout their time at Sevenoaks to help foster a deeper love for theatre and to expand their technical skills on stage or behind the scenes.

Co-curricular Drama

The Drama department is a major contributor to the co-curricular life of the school. Around five productions are performed each year in the Sackville Theatre by the Sevenoaks School Theatre Company (SSTC). The department also runs a variety of clubs for scholars and interested students.

Assessment Process

Drama scholarships are open to candidates from any school. The scholarship assessment will take the form of three tasks which will need preparation in advance: a solo performance, a short presentation, and leading part of a creative workshop as part of a group.

The scholarship is awarded for exhibiting strong theatre-making skills, performance skills, and most importantly co-curricular endeavour. At 13+, candidates would be expected to study Drama through the Middle School. In the Sixth Form candidates are not required to study Theatre as part of their IB Diploma, but it would be advantageous to study Theatre (in Group 6) or English Literature and Performance (in Group 1).

All scholarships are reviewed annually and their continuance is dependent upon satisfactory conduct, attitude, participation and progress. At such a review, holders of awards are expected to assess their own contribution and to set targets for themselves.

Holders of the scholarship will become artistic ambassadors – the best example of what a student of Drama can be – and participate fully in the co-curricular theatre programme.

How to apply

For Year 9 (13+), all candidates who have already been offered and have accepted a place at the school will be invited to apply for a Drama scholarship. This invitation is also extended to current students who joined the school at Year 7 (11+). Drama scholarship applications should be submitted by 1 February of Year 8 and the scholarship assessment day will be held in May.

Year 12 (16+) candidates should express an interest in a Drama scholarship at the confirmation stage of application. Selected candidates are invited for assessment in November after sitting the academic entrance exams in October. Internal students can be nominated for an honorary scholarship in Year 11.
