For Creative Writing Week, 7-12 February 2011, Sevenoaks was very fortunate to have OS Rebecca Connell as Writer in Residence in the English Department for three days.
Rebecca’s first novel, The Art of Losing, was published in hardback by Fourth Estate in March 2009. Her second novel, Told in Silence, was also published by Fourth Estate in June 2010. She has just completed a third novel.
Rebecca ran a number of creative writing workshops during the week, both in lessons and at lunchtimes. The afternoon workshop with the Lower Sixth pupils in Verve (the editing team for the school’s creative writing magazine) was particularly successful. Rebecca also gave a lunchtime talk and reading from her new novel; an inspiring and entertaining session on both writing and publishing.
Another highlight of the week was a screen writing workshop run by Dr Chris Greenhalgh; an illuminating session for the students and an insight into film as a visual medium.
The Verve team had their own opportunity to run a short creative writing session, leading tutor group activities for Years 7, 8 and 9 in morning registration. Throughout the week they did a fantastic job promoting creative writing in the school and encouraging students of all year groups to submit their work to Verve.
We are currently open for submissions: Tell us about it.
