"Some hae meat and canna eat,
and some wad eat that want it,
but we hae meat and we can eat,
and sae the Lord be thankit."
So goes the 'Selkirk Grace' read in finest Scottish accent by Mr. C. to kick off the proceedings at the IC celebration of Burns Night (a little late) on the 5th February this year. A splendid Scottish meal of haggis, tatties & neeps (potatoes and swede for the uninitiated) followed by Scottish salmon and kedgeree and the famous calorific pudding 'Cranachan'was enjoyed by all and we are very grateful to the school kitchen staff who came to the IC to serve us. Extra haggis was provided as Mr. C. stabbed 'the beast' while reciting 'Ode to a Haggis' by Robbie Burns and we toasted the haggis with a nip of (watered down) whisky!
The highlight of the evening had to be the Scottish dancing. The lasses arrived after the meal, welcomed warmly by Tim Smith, then the dancing began. We were very lucky to have the 'caller', Mr. Peter Taylor (an ex-Sevenoaks parent) again this year who presided over dances such as 'The Gay Gordons', 'Strip the Willow', 'The Dashing White Sergeant' and 'The Eightsome Reel' - how he manages to control 100 students from all over the world and guide us all into enjoying some convincing Scottish moves is a mystery - we couldn't do it without him and extend our heartfelt thanks for his brave efforts.
It was a fantastic evening of fun and frolics and, we hope, one to be repeated next year - we just need a Scottish boy to join the IC in the new L6 as we have now run out of 'Smiths'! Lang mey yer lum reek!
