On the weekend of 19 July 2011, around 80 Year10 students travelled to the South Downs to start their Bronze DofE expedition. It was an overcast day when the first few groups set off. The walking, although tiring, was generally a success. However, reaching their campsite, some groups discovered the possible difficulties with camping. One group even had to make unplanned adjustments to the tent, which had to be held up with umbrellas when they forgot the tent poles! When the rain started, some other groups found that they should have checked their tent for holes. Even so, everybody managed to last the night, despite the weather being rather cold and damp.
On the second morning, we started to feel the effects of the previous day, with blisters developing and aches everywhere. Finally, after a long and exhausting two days, the end was in sight. Every participating group managed to successfully complete the challenge and fulfil their expedition’s aim.
