All England National U16 Netball Finals

On Saturday 19 March, Sevenoaks School represented the London and South East Region in the U16 National Schools Netball Championships in Southampton.

Sevenoaks got off to a great start with closely fought victories over Millthorpe School (7-5) and St Peter’s School (8-5). Outstanding defensive work by Emily Shepherd-Barron and Lizzie Seeley created enough turnover opportunities to protect the tight lead. A convincing third victory over Newcastle Central (13-3) witnessed a sublime attacking performance, with captain Polly Young and Nicola Wilkinson combining well to find shooters Lily Elliott and Lucy Lawson.

Sevenoaks then squandered a half-time lead over Sharnbrook and had to fight to the end to secure a draw (8-8). This was followed by another tight match against Oundle. Even at half-time the score was tied and all to play for, but an untimely injury led to goal-keeper Millie Shepherd-Barron leaving the court to be replaced by centre Hanna Jay. Sevenoaks lost their shape and composure and gave away too much possession leading to a 6-8 defeat.

Sevenoaks were simply out-played in their next two games against Bacup & Rawtenstall (6-12), and Bromsgrove (6-13). Unlike the Bromsgrove team, whose England shooter did not miss, Sevenoaks struggled to find the net and disappointingly fell short of securing any points from either match.

Unfortunately this was the end of the Sevenoaks dream, and with only pride to play for, they managed to lift their spirits to end the day on a high with a well-deserved 10-8 victory over local rivals Brighton College.

This was a tremendous achievement by Sevenoaks, who have not reached Netball Nationals before. The girls played with spirit and determination and were able to demonstrate that they are capable of competing at this level. Final position 5th out of 9 in their pool.
