Whether your interest in music manifests as relaxed listening or centre-stage performing, we are confident that the Music department will inspire a lifelong love of the food of love.

A practical subject within an academic curriculum.

Director of Music

Sevenoaks School prides itself on a Music department that allows the students to explore music academically as well as practically and achieve excellence both inside and outside the curriculum. Since 2003, all of the IB students have achieved level 5, 6 or 7, with around 70 per cent achieving the top two levels. Between 2012 and 2014, 92 per cent of our GCSE students achieved A* at that level.

Since 2014 we have been following our own syllabus for Middle School students, and the Sevenoaks School Certificate in Music is now a thriving course taken by some 30 pupils. The SSC course requires students to listen, perform and compose. The listening is based on a thorough survey of Western classical music and a broad study of world music. The students also continue their instrumental studies, performing throughout the course in both a solo and ensemble capacity and undertaking at least one original composition. Each student is required to submit a personal project, based on an area of their personal interest.

We also offer an SSC in Music History, the aims of which are to encourage the study and appreciation of the evolution of Western music, and to allow students to put the evolution of Western music into a historical context. The syllabus includes an introduction to Western classical music from the Middle Ages to the present day, a unit on twentieth-century popular music, a study of ten significant pieces, a specialist study and a personal project.

The IB Diploma course extends the principles of the Music SSC in that all students are required to listen, perform and compose once more. Emphasis is put on analysis skills and students complete the course with the confidence to talk about and write on any style or genre of music and also to take part in performances of music according to their areas of expertise.
